Busting Out All Over

Yes, it is Spring…that glorious time of year when everything that grows seems just ready to burst at any moment into a riot of color and excitement. And so it is at the Plant Barn…where, truth be told, Spring can be found at any time of the year.

Now for a serious moment or two. Yes, there will be more classes this season; just not quite yet. With the Chief Flower Floozy on crutches after a much needed foot repair, classes would be a real strain for the two Floozies remaining on duty at this busy time of year. But, the classes will return and in the meantime, the 'Chief' is busy planning and ordering for the best growing season ever! There will be more gifts and a wider variety…she always listens to your suggestions.

So check back here now and then and you will see a notice for a class…we promise! Or better yet, stop by the Plant Barn, in person, and see what has already arrived for the new year.

Here it is…

Coming soon. Very soon! Veggies 101. How and what to plant for putting food on your table and creating a beautiful garden at the same time. Now that makes sense! You can learn which seeds to plant and when. Also which vegetables should be grown together. Learn how to grow vegetables with flowers; flowers that do double duty as insect repellants! And it's easier than you think. Do you have a 4'x8' spot in your backyard that isn't being used? How about a raised bed planter? Learn all about this and more on February 22nd at the Plant Barn. 2 PM. All questions will welcomed and answered. Guaranteed.

Oops! Almost forgot. Herbs are food too. And so easy to grow. Surely you have room for a small herb garden?

Call 345-3121 to reserve a space in the class, or drop by and do it in person…at the Plant Barn! 406 Entler Avenue. Chico, of course.

And the plants will be at their best in this kind of weather. You're not a plant, so hot drinks will be available to keep the chill away if needed.

Construction Zone

Good things are happening. The Plant Barn is getting a new look and new space is being added. Sunny space! A place for the roses to really shine.

Here's Some

Here are the two roses we bought... I doubt that the photos will do them justice.

Hot Cocoa

And the second one...I couldn't find a link on the Weeks page, so here's another link. Austrian Copper

You may want to hurry down to the Plant Barn. With weather like this, I think a lot of bare root roses will be going in the ground.

Roses and More

Jeekers! So many roses...the Weeks roses shipment has arrived and you need to look at them. Soon. And I have to get some pictures posted here so that you can be truly motivated to come and look for yourself. Denise has done a great job of selecting varieties...

(I couldn't help myself. I should know better. But we saw at least two roses that we had to have. They are sitting in a bucket of water right now and will be planted this afternoon, if we can find the proper spot for them.)

And other bare root offerings are in as well. Weeping Cherry; fantastic! Bada Bing Cherry; another beauty! And of course some dwarf peaches to go along with the cherries. I bought both of those last year and they are doing great. Do I need more?

Roses 101

I know we said we would be open on the 5th and if you came by, you might have been disappointed to see the lights off and the gate closed. A 'little' storm happened along and changed the schedule. Luckily, damage was minimal and we're open again and just in time, because...

Bareroot roses are here and it's time for a new class...Roses 101.

You can learn all about Rose Pruning! And choosing varieties;

  1. Floribunda
  2. Grandiflora
  3. Climbers
  4. Hybrid Teas

Meet this years new varieties and learn all about planting bare root.

Class will meet at the Plant Barn on Sunday, January 20th at 2 PM.

Give them a call and get yourself enrolled. (530) 345-3121

Pansies

Wife and friends were in the kitchen this morning, busy making cards for the church bazaar this weekend and I happened to notice that dried pansies were being used. OK, I don't know why, but the pansy is my favorite flower. I think it may have to do with my mother cutting them fresh from the garden and then floating the blossoms in a large, almost flat bowl. The bowl was glazed in a dark blue and the bright colors of the pansies shone! (Where is that bowl?)
A great flower to cut, to dry, or just to look at. And the Plant Barn has some for you...
